Hi LUG,

here is info for an open science course I will be teaching next semester.
It is focused on the trending geospatial field, but there is a lot of
general things as well. The topic is open science which translates to a lot
of open source.

Please, share it with your friends or colleagues if you think open science
or open source is something which can be useful for them. See the official
description below and attached flyer for more details.

And please excuse me and let me know if I'm sharing this in a wrong way. I
got little bit out of the loop on how LUG does these announcements now.

Vashek (Vaclav)

Tools for open geospatial science
GIS 610-003 (on campus) and GIS 610-603 (DE)

The course will cover emerging field of open science and will deal with
reproducibility and replicability challenges of computational research. The
students will gain a hands-on experience with tools used by scientists to
create geospatial research which can be validated by the wider geospatial
community. Several geospatial open source tools will be discussed in
connection with general-purpose and text authoring tools such as next
generation interactive documents and revision control tools. Although the
focus of the course is open science, many of the tools used in the course
are used in the industry. The course will cover how open source communities
and software development process work and how to apply this for research in
a lab group. Students will have an option to participate in writing a
collaborative publication covering the course topics.

Some of the software covered: Markdown, Git, QGIS, Linux, GRASS GIS,
Jupyter Notebook, GDAL, Docker, Leaflet

Time and place: Wednesday, 3:00pm - 4:50pm (110 min), Jordan Hall 5119
Structure: Lecture combined with hands-on exercise which overlaps with a
short homework
Grading: S/U, 1 credit

Hi LUG,

This Tuesday at our technical meeting Michael Marley will be giving a
redux of last year's talk on installing Linux-based firmware on home
routers. He'll be walking us through setup and configuration of LEDE
(the fork of OpenWRT) on his own hardware. If you like networks or
bricking your home electronics be sure to come to this one :-)

Meeting time is at 7:00 P.M.

Place is Room 3001, EBII (890 Oval Drive).

Be there or be an equilateral rectangle in the Euclidian space.
